The Death of Daytime Soaps Continue…
Remember when soaps used to rule daytime and the minds of housewives, men sick from work or unemployed, and teens who had nothing else to watch on a sick day?
Well those times are about to meet their maker, because soaps are dropping like flies (and no they will not return two or three years later as an amnesiac).
CBS released a statement this morning that detailed the cancellation of As The World Turns, which will be ending its run in September 2010. "It's extremely difficult to say good-bye to a long-running series that's been close to our hearts for so long," said Barbara Bloom, Senior Vice President, Daytime Programming. "[...] the true legacy of As The World Turns will be the fictional characters and stories of a small Midwest town that resonated every day with millions of viewers over multiple generations, becoming a treasured daytime institution in the process." Fox Thanks Fringe For Seven Week Winning Streak
3 hours ago
Good news for Fringe fans. If you are worried about how Fox might feel about Fringe's waning ratings, turn your frown upside down. Fox celebrated its seventh straight week as a winner (by Fox math), and had no qualms about parading Fringe as part of its lineup of ratings winners. It's not surprising to see Fox celebrating Fringe's performance though, as last week's episode matched the Fringe season 2 premiere numbers – a feat any show would be hard pressed to pull off.
Still, there can be little question that Fox's dominance in the market share of 18-49 year old adults – the measure of any networks virility – is due mostly to wunderkinds like House, Lie To Me, and Glee – all three continue to post freakishly huge shares in that key advertising segment.
None-the-less, if Fringe can hold onto those numbers – or even improve on them – the prospects for a third season are better than ever. »

Interview – 'Outer Space Astronauts' Creator Russell Barrett
3 hours ago
Tonight on Syfy a new series will premiere call Outer Space Astronauts. This mock-sci-fi comedy series is something very new and very different for Syfy, and for the rest of us as well. If you've seen clips or screen shots and you've had negative thoughts that relate to the low-tech look of show, well, then you're totally missing the point here. Outer Space Astronauts just happens to take place in outer space, but it's really more of a workplace comedy that uses sci-fi conventions. TVOvermind got an opportunity to talk to the shows creator, producer, and yes, even actor, Russell Barrett about his new show, his inspirations, and why being a sci-fi fan can be so frustrating some times.
Tvo: When did you first come up with the idea for Outer Space Astronauts and what was the process that you went through creating it all?

Men of a Certain Age Pwns Cable
Newsflash: Middle aged men are in. Now I feel safe admitting I'm over 40. Ray Romano's Men of a Certain Age, a series I personally dismissed as demographically narrow but brilliant, seized the top spot in ad-supported cable premieres this year with a whopping 5.4 million viewers. Now, the segmentation shows what one would reasonably expect: almost half of those viewers fit in the 25-54 age range. Yup, and you can bet that two other statistics aren't going to be discussed, despite the huge overall number: the concentration of males, and the concentration in the upper end of that spread. But really, who cares – middle aged men need TV shows too.
Men of a Certain Age stars Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula as a tight knit trio of friends dealing with advancing age and all the typically amusing ways we males tend to resist it. The humor is un-apologetically targeted »

Here's a bit more info from Fox

Heroes Being Renewed After All?
Please, NBC, I can't handle this emotional roller-coaster you have me on. One week Heroes is great, the next week it sucks, then one of my favorite under-utilized Heroes actors Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder) is cast on Doctor Who's David Tennant's new show (David Tennant doing a show for Us prime-time?! For. The. Win), now he's off because – apparently - he'll be needed for the next season of Heroes. And here I thought NBC had finally had enough abuse and had removed the feeding tube. If Heroes is not in the television equivalent of a persistent vegetative state, I don't know of a better example.
So here is what is going on. Kristin from E! is hinting at some inside info from the Heroes camp that Sendhil was yanked back to Heroes because the show is going to continue for another season. The only way this could possibly be »

SNL to Air Christmas Special on December 17
4 hours ago
SNL is one of those things that is either really good or really bad. It floundered for a while (I think in the late 1990s), then it resurged again with people like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Nowadays, I love the digital shorts and anything with Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig (Wiig is hilarious). So for the first time in seven years, SNL will be airing a holiday special, which will feature new material by current cast members and other stars, as well as favorite holiday sketches from seasons past.
SNL Gets Into The Holiday Spirit With "SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas" A Two-hour Primetime Special On Thursday, December 17 From 8Pm-10Pm Et On NBC
New York – December 8, 2009 – SNL premieres a new holiday compilation, "SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas" on Thursday, December 17 from 8:00pm – 10:00pmET. This is SNL's first holiday special since 2002.

Review – Lost The Complete Fifth Season on Blu Ray
7 hours ago
Getting a review copy of Lost The Complete Fifth Season 'The Journey Back – Expanded Edition' before the street date really didn't give me much of an advantage as a reviewer. By this time, I would hope that anybody with enough interest to read a 'Blu Ray' review is aware of the technical beauty of the Blu Ray format. Simply put, it exceeds the broadcast quality (ABC broadcasts the show at 720p, and yes I know you have 1080i/1080p cable or satellite but guess what: it's up sampled) significantly.
To say you have not seen Lost until you have seen it in true 1080p high def might be a bit of a stretch, but you have certainly not seen it at its best. The natural locations of Lost matched with the high art of shot composition and blocking executed by the crew is very worthy of mega-high definition. Add in »

Review – Lost Season 5 DVD
Enter our contest to win a Lost Season 5 DVD set!
Season 5 of Lost was a total mind trip. I'd like to say that Lost has always been a work of absolute perfection, but we can all admit that the show lost its way (no pun intended) in Season 3. Then came Season 4, which went a long way in redeeming the series. The freighter folk found the island, while the Oceanic 6 managed to escape. The season finale delivered one of the biggest shocks: John Locke was dead.
Fast forward to the Season 5 premiere and we're immediately introduced to the Dharma Initiative, while back on the mainland, the Oceanic 6 are trying to return to the island. And then, the time travel – cue the mind trip. Time travel has always fascinated me to the point of confusion and Lost was no exception. But surely I wasn't the only person debating it with my co-workers »

Promo – Gossip Girl 3.13
Last night's Gossip Girl was its Fall finale and the show is now on hiatus until the new year (look for our post about show return dates, which will hopefully be up soon). Last night was quite the doozy episode, right? Was that Chuck's mother by Bart's graveside? All signs point to yes, but what's her story? Fortunately, theCW aired a short preview for the next episode, which you can view below.
In the meantime, check out Mark's recap of last night's episode.

Gossip Girl 3.12 "The Debarted" Recap
The last Gossip Girl of 2009 had a lot of high notes, and one big low note. Compared to last week's outing, tonight's episode was great in the last 15-20 minutes, but the ghost of Bart Bass bit… Uhhh…
The Set Up
Serena and Trip are driving on a dark windy road, but the cold weather outside can't top the chilly atmosphere inside the car. After arguing over the radio, Trip apologizes for something, but Serena says the damage is already done. Then as Trip tells Serena he loves her and wants to try again and make it up, he doesn't pay attention to the road. There is a family of wolves in the middle of the road and Serena screams for Trip to watch out. He swerves out the way and rams the car into a road rail.
Whoa!

The newest housewife show is heading to VH1. This time, it's all about basketball players, but most importantly, the women who love them.
THR and ProJo Sports Blog report that VH1 has bought eight episodes of "Basketball Wives", which will chronicle the lives of six wives (girlfriends, ex girlfriends/fiancees, baby mamas, etc) of NBA basketball players. The show will be a half-hour and the docusoap has already got it's cast of women to showcase what all it entails to be a basketball wife.
The cast will consist of Shaunie O'Neal (wife of Shaquille O'Neal), Jennifer Williams (wife of Eric Williams), Royce Reed (Dwight Reed's baby mother), Evelyn Lozada (ex-fiancee of Antoine Walker), Faith Rain (girlfriend of Udonis Halsem), and Mesha O'Neal (wife of Jermaine O'Neal).

"Dallas" Reboot Has Found It's Writer
7 December 2009 12:52 PM, PST
Primetime soaps wouldn't be what they are now if it wasn't for the granddaddy of them all… Dallas.
A couple of months ago, we reported on the possibility of the Texan drama making a comeback to our television screens. This morning, The Hollywood Reporter announced that TNT, who is behind the nouveau Dallas 2.0, has hired Cynthia Cidre ("Cane", Mambo Kings) to write the pilot episode. TNT is keeping mum about plot details and want to see what Cidre brings to the table first before moving forward with the project.
The concept thrown around a couple of months ago would have had the revival to follow the exploits of John Ross Ewing III, the son of the evil J.R. Ewing and alcoholic Sue Ellen Ewing, and Christopher, Bobby and Pam Ewing's adopted son. No word on whether or not these elements will end up in the Cidre version of the show. »
