Sneak Peek: 'Tron Legacy' makes an electric revelation

It's been a semi-tough year for Walt Disney Studios.  They've had big hits such as "The Proposal" and Pixar's "Up," but expected blockbusters such as "G-Force," "Surrogates" and "A Christmas Carol" were anything but.  This lead to chairman Dick Cook getting axed and eventually his head of marketing met the same fate.  But while Cook may have leaned a bit to heavily on the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus' of the Disney family to keep things afloat (which wasn't always the smartest strategy), he did put a number of films into production that have a chance of truly breaking out past... »

Cameron Diaz hot for 'Bad Teacher'

Every few films Cameron Diaz returns to the type of outrageous comedy that made her a star in "There's Something About Mary."  Whether it's "Charlie's Angels" or "What Happens in Vegas," Diaz continues to mix up her dramas and occasional thrillers with the easy hits that still make her a box office star.  After the two 2009 disappointments "My Sister's Keeper" and "The Box" is anyone surprised she's jumped for "Bad Teacher"? The Columbia Pictures comedy will be directed by "Walk Hard" and "Orange County" director Jake Kasdan and will find Diaz playing a dirty-mouthed, gold-digging and newly single middle-school teacher... »

Thoughts on the 'Top Chef Las Vegas' finale and winner

Within one or two weeks of the start of the "Top Chef Las Vegas" season, most passionate viewers were ready to predict a Final Four of Kevin, Jennifer and the Voltaggio Brothers. Whether it was the editing or their clear talent that made this prediction such a no-brainer is unclear, but I'd say nobody was surprised when three-and-a-half months later, that's exactly the Final Four we ended up with.   The sixth installment of "Top Chef" (seventh, if you count "Top Chef Masters," which I don't but probably could) came to a close on Wednesday (Dec. 9) night.   The end... »

Tom Ford and Matthew Goode divulge the secrets of 'A Single Man'

Having already filled out my top ten films of the year list, it was somewhat surprising that Tom Ford's "A Single Man" made the cut.  A moving and powerful picture when I caught the drama's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, it was unclear how long an impression the picture would make or whether there would be numerous films that would jump ahead of it on what is obviously an incredibly subjective ranking of the year's best.  But in the months that have followed, so much of the picture including Colin Firth's revelatory performance and the exacting detail of Ford's... »

Recap: 'So You Think You Can Dance' - Week 7 - Eliminations

It’s the show before the finals! Omg! I am exhausted before the show even starts. Maybe watching elimination Wednesdays could count as a workout, because they have become pretty nerve wracking. The truth is, at this point you don’t really want anyone to go because the bar has, truly, been set so high. Not even Mollee. No joke. [Full recap of Wednesday (Dec. 9) night's "So You Think You Can Dance," including the results and your Final Six after the break...] Anyway, we start things off with Cat wearing a wretched neon yellow belt over a housedress and the traditional group... »

TV's Best of the Decade: No. 23 -- 'Dexter'

The auteur theory is alive and well on the small screen, albeit not in the same way as you'd see in the movies.   Folks like David E. Kelley, Stephen Bochco, Aaron Sorkin, David Chase, Joss Whedon, David Simon, Matthew Weiner, Alan Ball, Josh Schwartz, Shonda Rhimes or Cuselof may not get a "TV Show By" credit before the start of each episode, but the industry's super-powered writer-producers and showrunners are generally considered to be the arbiters for the voices of many of our favorite shows.    Mostly it's the creators whose names are associated with the oversight of excellent programming,... »

iTunes' top sellers of 2009: How about Mj, Jay-z, Lady GaGa?

Which artists sold the most in 2009? That answer will be revealed in a few days when Billboard releases its list of top sellers based on Nielsen SoundScan, but in the meantime, the world’s largest music seller, iTunes, has weighed in. Kings of Leon’s “Only by the Night,” was the top album download on iTunes for this year (this also includes album-equivalent, which means 10 tracks from an album or more), while the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow,” was the leading single download. Below are the top albums and tracks lists. A few observations: While “Only by the Night”... »

FX has ordered a second season for the fantasy football comedy "The League."   The 13-episode order comes the day before "The League" is set to wrap up its first season, following an initial run of episodes that have averaged 1.06 million viewers, including 863,000  in the 18-49 demo. The Morning Read: Josh Brolin's in 'Men In Black 3' and reshooting 'Jonah Hex'?

Welcome to The Morning Read. I think it's official.  2009 has just plain kicked my ass. I've never been sick as many times in a year as I have been this year.  I've never slept less hours in a year than I did this year.  I've never worked as much in a year as I have this year.  I perpetually feel like I'm being chased by a bear.  My comprehensive physical last week is the first one in the last decade that I outright failed, with my doctor just writing "No" on my chart and circling it in red.  I find... »

TV Ratings: 'Biggest Loster' finale makes NBC a Tuesday winner

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009.   The finale of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" gave NBC a strong night, even pushing "The Jay Leno Show" to its highest ratings in recent memory.   Meanwhile, in other new programming, ABC viewers came out in droves for the premiere of the new animated offering "Prep & Landing," a few stuck around for a new episode of "Scrubs" and then, sadly, everybody left in time for the critically acclaimed "Better Off Ted."   NBC controlled the night among adults 18-49, doing a 4.3 rating in the key demo. There was a three-network... »

How many critic's groups awards can Oscar frontrunner 'Up in the Air' win?

9 December 2009 2:24 AM, PST

Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air" has already won the Best Picture Award from the National Board of Review and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics, but three of the biggest guns and Oscar influencers are being announced within the next week.  The big question is: can "Up in the Air" go for the sweep?  Well, yes, but most likely no. Los Angeles Film Critics - Sunday, Dec. 10 Contenders: "Up in the Air," "Hurt Locker," "500 Days of Summer" and "A Serious Man" Lowdown: Intriguingly, Lafca members haven't picked an Oscar winner for Best Picture since "Schindler's List" in 1993. ... »

Recap: 'So You Think You Can Dance' - Week 7 - Top 8 Performances

8 December 2009 10:34 PM, PST

Final eight. Or, um, seven. One of the girls is missing. And it’s (racking my brain, racking my brain) Ashleigh! No! This can’t be happening! Or maybe it isn’t, because Cat, who is dressed like a 1980s pirate who chooses to wear her ill-gotten gold as ugly shorts instead of burying it (though really, I’d suggest burying those shorts or at least melting them down for cash or a nice necklace), isn’t mentioning it. At all. She yacks about next week, and then this week, and I have just about decided that Ashleigh is dead and everyone’s too broken up about... »

Oscar Watch: Madonna walks the 'Single Man' red carpet for buddy Tom Ford

8 December 2009 6:36 PM, PST

Tom Ford got some major star power on the red carpet Monday night for the New York premiere of his directorial debut "A Single Man."  None other than Madonna, who rarely attends such functions, strutted her stuff to help bring attention to Ford's impressive drama at its Museum of Modern Art screening.  Considering how much the Weinstein's attention appears to be centered on "Nine," it was a nice paparazzi boost for the film which opens in limited release this Friday in Los Angeles and New York.  Expected Best Actor nominee Colin Firth, Best Supporting Actress contender Julianne Moore and Nicholas Hoult... »

Watch: Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman discuss 'Invictus'

8 December 2009 6:00 PM, PST

I've never had reason to sit down with Matt Damon before this year, and now we've done interviews twice in four months. And as a special added bonus, this time he brought Morgan Freeman with him. This was part of last Friday's running around that culminated in my evening with Peter Jackson that I wrote about yesterday.  This TV spot was typically brief, and I was the very last person in the room that day, so I expected the two of them would be worn out.  Instead, I was impressed by how they treated me with the same courtesy and gave me... »

'Up in the Air' and 'Hurt Locker' dominate Washington Critics Awards

8 December 2009 5:24 PM, PST

Eager to get out of the gate before their more respected colleagues in Los Angeles and New York, the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics announced their 2009 awards yesterday.  Of course, the organization hadn't seen all of the possible contenders such as "Crazy Heart" or "Avatar," but like that really matters right?  There were relatively few surprises as "Up in the Air" won Best Picture and Best Actor (George Clooney), but "The Hurt Locker" had a strong showing winning director and Best Ensemble.   More major critics awards will be announced his weekend.  Be sure to check HitFix or @HitFixGregory on Twitter... »
