Paul Greengrass Confirms That He’s Quit Bourne 4

As we reported yesterday, director Paul Greengrass has will not direct the highly-anticipated fourth installment of the Bourne franchise .  Greengrass issued to following statement [via BFDMemo]:

You won’t find a more devoted supporter of the Bourne franchise than me. I will always be grateful to have been the caretaker to Jason Bourne over the course of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. I’m very proud of those films and feel they express everything I most passionately believe about the possibility of making quality movies in the mainstream. My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge. There’s been no disagreement with Universal Pictures. The opportunity to work with the Bourne family again is a difficult thing to pass up, but we have discussed this together and they have been incredibly understanding and supportive. I’ve been »

Concept Art From Marvel’s Super-Heroes Theme Park in Dubai

Before the credit crisis and the deal with Disney, United Arab Emirate-based Al Ahli Group and Marvel Entertainment announced a deal to bring many of Marvel’s biggest characters to Dubai for a brand new theme park that would focus on the world famous characters.  The plan was for character themed rides based on The Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Silver Surfer, and Spider-Man.  While I have no idea if the deal with Disney has changed the deal, or if Dubai’s financial troubles will derail the park, I do know what it might look like!  That’s because concept art has hit the net and you can check out some great looking images after the jump.  With rides like “Flying with Spidey”, “Fantasticar” and “X-Men: Danger Room”, Marvel fanboys might be flying across the world to check this place out!

A big thank you to Disneyandmore (via Cinematical) for posting these images. »

New Derrick Comedy Video: “Don’t Jerk Off To This”; Their Film Mystery Team Opens in NYC This Friday

Derrick Comedy, the genius minds behind one of 2009’s best comedies, Mystery Team, have just debuted a new sketch called “Don’t Jerk Off To This”.  It’s age-old wisdom but so many of us struggle to follow it on a daily basis.  You can check it out after the jump and you should.  Just remember not to jerk off to it.

As for Mystery Team, citizens of New York City will have the chance to see the film when it opens this Friday and they can buy tickets online right now at movietickets.com.  It’s nice because it’s not like NYC is great enough so this is a real treat for them.  As for me and my fellow Atlantans, there are now 273 people on Eventful demanding that the film come to our city.  I want to see if we can break at least 300 by the end of »

New Trailer for Rockstar San Diego’s Red Dead Redemption, Which is Grand Theft Auto as a Spaghetti Western

If the idea of a sandbox-style spaghetti western video game, doesn’t appeal to you, then we have nothing to talk about. Ever again.  A new trailer for Rockstar San Diego’s Red Dead Redemption has come online and it makes the time until the game’s release date feel like an eternity.  I know I should try to employ some wider and less vocabulary in my writing but “completely fucking bad-ass” is the best way I can describe this trailer.  It kept reminding of the 2005 video game Gun which was such a great first step of a western sandbox game; it just required a bigger sandbox, some more side quests, and a more balanced leveling system.  Oh, and a final boss fight that wasn’t complete crap.

For those who don’t know, Rockstar is the company behind the Grand Theft Auto games.  However, the GTA series is specifically »

New Prince Of Persia Poster Has the Courage to Do a Close Up of Jake Gyllenhaal Looking Bored

Complimenting Gemma Arterton’s “Destiny” poster for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Disney has released a new poster highlighting “Courage”.  What is courage?  Courage is Jake Gyllenhaal giving you a bored/stoned look.  Prince of Persia is a big-budget action movie with plenty of death-defying scenes and “courage” is Jake “Not-Persian” Gyllenhaal letting you know that he’s super-duper excited for his new movie; he’s just really good at hiding it.

Hit the jump to check out the new poster along with a synopsis.  Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters on May 28, 2010.

Head over to Planeta Disney [via /Film] to see a larger version of the image.

War Machine in High Resolution! Plus New Iron Man 2 Photos

Paramount has sent over a super high resolution version of the new Iron Man 2 poster featuring our first look at War Machine and you can check it out after the jump.  And while that would be awesome on its own, they’ve also sent over a few new images and they’re also in high res!  And while most images reveal almost nothing about a movie, one of the images features Mickey Rourke with a lot of interesting items in the background…

Finally, here’s the big news.

We’ve finally gotten our backend working properly so we’re going to start offering high resolution versions of certain posters and images starting today.  It’s going to be like the old version of Collider, click on an image and if it’s in high res, it’ll open in a new window and you can either right click and »

YouTube Has iTunes Envy: Wants to Offer New Shows for $1.99

While YouTube has been a problem for movie studios and television networks in the past, now that everyone is working together to monetize internet viewers, it seems they might be new Bff’s.  That’s because mediamemo is reporting YouTube wants to offer what Apple does with iTunes: television shows, without commercials, for $1.99 an episode, the day after they air on broadcast or cable.

But there is one big difference.  Unlike iTunes, which lets consumers own the shows, YouTube will only stream the episode, and not let you save it.

While I believe YouTube is going to cut a deal with the networks, they’re definitely going to have to adjust the price tag, or offer more than the one episode for the same price.  Perhaps they could cut a great deal for a season pass, or find other innovative extras to make it more attractive for consumers.

2009 Spirit Award Nominees

Film Independent’s Spirit Awards are meant to honor “indie” films, i.e. no blockbuster movies allowed but if you played at some festivals and didn’t cost a lot of money, you’re in consideration.  The Spirit Awards are a good indicator of what smaller films could be getting a shot at Oscar nominations in various categories.  Usually, their nominees are pretty solid and play like a nice alternative universe where the Oscars went to more deserving nominees (last year The Wrestler won Best Film and Best Actor).

But this year’s choices are obvious mixed with disappointingly bizarre.  In a year where some strong, hard-sell films came out of Sundance with strong buzz, the Spirit Awards have instead shown love to movies like Two Lovers, Cold Souls, and (500) Days of Summer.  It’s not that any of these films are resoundingly bad, but when placed alongside obvious contenders »

Fight Club 10th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

We’re ten years on from Fight Club. There’s still so much to talk about, but the text has been evaluated, eviscerated and analyzed a great deal over that time. Fight Club was an obsession for me when it came out; I saw it at an early screening and it spoke to me. I got it. And it became the movie I took people to see. I ended up in the theater at least ten times with different sets of friends to enjoy this brilliant black comedy. My review of Fight Club after the jump.

The film opens with an unnamed narrator (Edward Norton) sweating and with a gun in his mouth. The gun owner is Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and a bunch of high-rise buildings are about to be destroyed. That’s the ticking clock, and the film then explains how Norton got there. The narrator is unhappy »

Universal Announces ‘Flipper’ Discs. Features Both Blu-ray and DVD Versions on One Disc

Universal Studios has announced a new type of dual-format disc they’re calling “Flipper” discs and it’ll launch in January with the Bourne movies.  The discs will feature Blu-ray and DVD versions on each side of the same disc.  According to the studio:

“Universal’s flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.  “The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do.”

This is one of those products that really should have launched when Blu-ray got released.  But everything about the launch of Blu-ray was screwed up, it »

The Hangover 2 Update from Director Todd Phillips

Anyone who followed the progress of director Todd Phillips The Hangover knows Warner Bros. has talked about a sequel since before the movie got released.  The story is the studio loved the footage, loved the movie, and knew they had a huge hit before the film got released.  Of course we all know what happened, as The Hangover went to become to highest grossing R rated comedy of all time, taking in almost $460 million at the worldwide box office.  That is a staggering amount of money for any film, let alone a comedy starring no movie stars.  Therefore it’s no surprise the studio has already announced a May 25th, 2011 release date for The Hangover 2.

When I spoke to Todd Phillips at the Las Vegas junket for the first film, he told me he already had an idea for the sequel, but wouldn’t give me any info on where it would take place. »

New Image from Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

USA Today has landed a new image from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (click to enlarge) and it’s exactly the kind of image you get from a movie a year away.  Meaning, you see the actors and nothing more.  That’s because when a studio releases a new image from a movie that’s not close to coming out, they never show you the goods.  They always show you a shot of the people in the movie looking at something, or standing still, but you never see what they’re fighting, or what the movie is about. A money shot is the kind of image you save till just before release.

So while this image is take it or leave it, I don’t know one Harry Potter fan that isn’t looking forward to the two movie finale (part 1 arrives November 2010 and part 2 in 2011).  The last few »

Public Enemies Blu-ray Review

I root for Michael Mann even when he missteps, because he is one of America’s premier filmmakers, and one of the great visionaries of cinema. And, really, he’s only been building up steam. TV seemed to occupy him in the 80’s (even with three efforts, the best being Manhunter), but it wasn’t until 1995 that he really struck gold with Heat, and followed that up with The Insider. Both of which qualify as two of the best films of the 90’s. Since then it’s been a film every two or three years, and though none have been as great as those two, they run from the interesting to awesome. Public Enemies falls more into the interesting than awesome camp, but it is definitely solid, albeit familiar ground. My review after the jump.

Johnny Depp stars as John Dillinger, the bank-robbing, folk-hero of his era. A little bit Robin Hood-ish, »

Tron Legacy Writers Sucked into Disney’s Remake of The Black Hole

Joseph Kosinski (director) and Sean Bailey (producer) of Tron Legacy, the highly-anticipated sequel to 1982’s Tron, are teaming up again to revisit another Disney sci-fi classic: The Black Hole. The original followed a space expedition that bumps into another craft hovering just outside a black hole, on which the explorers find a scientist who refuses to let them go.  The $26 million feature was Disney’s most expensive at the time, and their first to receive a PG rating.

Though specifics on the project are scant, some aspects will remain the same while others won’t.  Namely, the menacing red robot Maximilian is expected to return, but the science behind black holes featured will be much closer to reality. Whether or not the plot will remain the same is unknown.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Travis Beacham is writing the project. Beacham is no stranger to remakes, with his Clash of the Titans »

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Could Be Broken Into Two Movies

When your movie makes over $481 million worldwide in the span of two weeks, the question isn’t whether or not to adapt the final book, but how many movies can you make from that final book?  Summit Entertainment, who are at this moment building giant pools of gold coins like the one Scrooge McDuck has in his money vault, are currently figuring out whether or not they can put the pieces in play to turn Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight series, into a two-part movie like what we’ll be seeing with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  Variety’s sources say that Summit wants two pictures (can you refer to “common sense” as a source?), but that means clearing two hurdles.  The first is whether or not they can afford to pay the higher salaries the lead actors will command for a fifth film.  It’s »

Six New TV Spots for Avatar Take a Revealing Look at Marketing

In accordance with the Earth making a full rotation around the Sun, six new TV spots for James Cameron’s Avatar have popped up and it’s interesting to see how you can cut a trailer so many ways to appeal to just the right crowd.  When you put all six of these in a row (as we’ve done after the jump), you kind of want a featurette on how they’re working to make sure Avatar is appealing to everyone.  I currently have a bet going with some friends that we’re going to see Robert Pattinson’s head super-imposed on an Avatar body before the film comes out on December 18th.

Hit the jump to watch the six new TV spots and hope that once all the marketing for Avatar is complete, we can edit every ad together and run a 24-hour Avatar TV Channel.  It will »

Quentin Tarantino Says Kill Bill Vol. 3 Isn’t Next and It’s Not Called Kill Bill Vol. 3

Speaking with MTV, Quentin Tarantino says that his next project isn’t Kill Bill Vol. 3 and that “Kill Bill Vol. 3″ wouldn’t even be the title.  This makes a lot of sense if you know how volume two ends (spoiler alert: Bill gets killed).  Tarantino says that another film in the franchise would be “Volume 3 of the story of the Bride” and since that isn’t very catchy, don’t expect that to be the title either.

Whatever the title may be, don’t expect to be seeing it on a marquee anytime soon.  Says Tarantino, “There’s no script; there are just ideas and notes.  I won’t do that next, but it could very well be the thing I do after next.”  While I sure do love speculating about a film that still doesn’t have a title or a script but brings back a popular character, at »

Alec Baldwin Says He’s Done with Acting

In a recent interview with Men’s Journal [via Reuters], Alec Baldwin, currently one of the most (intentionally) funny men on television right now, says he’ll be retiring from acting after 2012.  He’s pretty down on himself in the piece saying that his entire film acting career has been a failure. “I consider my entire movie career a complete failure,” he told Men’s Journal. “The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.” I’m sorry that Baldwin uses that metric because he’s not only an insanely talented comedian, but when most people think of the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross, his single scene in the film immediately comes to mind.  He also picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in 2003’s »

Four New Images from Karate Kid Starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith

30 November 2009 5:26 PM, PST

Sony Pictures just released four pictures from their upcoming remake of The Karate Kid.  Maybe it’s because Jackie Chan–who plays “Mr. Han”, the remake’s Mr. Miyagi–has such a big smile that you can’t see if inside he’s dying and he’s desperately just trying to go out in a blaze of glory where one of his famous stunts finally kills him.  It’s as if he’s trying to fulfill some destiny where his obituary reads, “Mr. Chan, who had done the ladder stunt countless times before…”  Of course, the flip side to all of this is his death would occur working on a remake of The Karate Kid or his other painful looking family film next year, The Spy Next Door.  Of course, no one wants to say, “He died doing what he loved: making disposable family fare.”

Check out the pictures after »
