Votd: Jim Jarmusch Sings Neil Young’s ‘Cortez the Killer’
2 hours ago
Director Jim Jarmusch loves Neil Young. The venerable singer/songwriter masterfully scored Jarmusch's Dead Man and with the band Crazy Horse was the object of the filmmaker's follow-up, the tour documentary Year of the Horse.
Jarmusch also seems to love the New York edition of the All Tomorrows Parties music festival which, for the past couple years, has taken place in the Catskills each September. In 2008 as friends and I strolled around Atp one of them said, "hey, there's Jim Jarmusch having a picnic." Evidently the director returned to the scene of his lunch again this year. How do we know? Because there's a video of him singing Neil Young's classic 'Cortez the Killer' in a hotel room at the fest.
The video comes from Pitchfork, which has been posting a great series called Surveillance, all of which so far were shot within the small, dingy rooms at Kutcher's,

Bryan Singer: “I Just Signed a Deal to Do an X-Men First Class Origins Picture”
No need to beat around the bush with this one: on the blue carpet for Avatar's La premiere earlier this evening, Bryan Singer offered up a tiny little detail about his follow-up to Jack the Giant Killer. He says he's signed to return to the X-Men franchise, for the film that will now presumably be called X-Men Origins: First Class.
Flickchart mentioned Singer's statement on Twitter, and it only took a few moments of combing through Ustream's archive of the live blue carpet video feed to find the brief interview with Singer. What he says, exactly, when asked about his next project is:
I'm prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer [at] Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool.
Here's the video:
This isn't entirely a surprise, as Singer has talked about

Old Dogs Kills Wild Hogs 2
Another movie bites the dust at Disney. At this point the studio is 2 for 3 when it comes to killing off projects that sound utterly lousy. This is a trend I could get to like if I wasn't certain it'll eventually affect something good. After preemptively striking down both Wedding Banned and the new 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (maybe making the score 3 for 3, depending on your taste for underwater adventure) Disney has taken Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride out behind the woodshed and shot it. What happened?
As Variety has it, Old Dogs is the culprit. (You may not be able to view that link now without a paid Variety password, but I'll source it anyway.) See, Wild Hogs was an unexpected smash in 2007, hitting with older audiences and opening to $40m, then going on to amass almost $170m domestic and $252m worldwide. Despite overwhelmingly negative ...

Lol: The Morgan Freeman Chain of Command
Morgan Freeman makes a great authority figure. His warm but rumbling voice, piercing eyes and increasingly snowy hair lend him all the essential qualities of command. No surprise that he is so often cast as a military officer, the president of various nations, and even God. (Where does he go after that? Galactus, maybe?)
What we really need is a diagram that clearly illustrates the many roles Freeman has played, and how they relate to one another in terms of authoritative presence. Oh, you say there is one? Indeed there is, and it is brilliant. Check it out after the break.
I believe Maxim Online originated this image, but it has spread around in the last couple days.
Along with the chart has come some comment thread controversy, thanks to the fact that Freeman's role as a freed slave is ranked below that of pimp and prison inmate. Those latter

Second Clash of the Titans Trailer - More Monsters, More Story
8 hours ago
Update: This trailer was online earlier this week, but removed by Warner Bros. The trailer is now officially online.
The freshly escaped second trailer for Louis Letterier's Clash of the Titans remake packs a whole lot more money shots. Monster money shots, of course, because that's the real currency here - the beasties. Avatar might just make Sam Worthington into a big star, though it most likely won't, and if it does, it will probably be the nine foot tall blue version of him that the world falls for. Tough break. And while I might turn out to see a film because it has Gemma Arterton in it, I know I'm in a minority there.
As well as showcasing more monster action, this trailer reveals a lot more of the film's plotline. Of course, the film is a remake and it's also all rooted in some familiar myths so you'll

Jason Segel Performs “Dracula’s Lament” on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
8 hours ago
Last night was the one thousandth episode of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, but evidently interns backstage failed to inform the ever-emo Dracula of the celebration. And not helping to curb his Transylmania-prolonged depression was the fact that Ferguson's Wavy the Alligator attempted to chomp his hand-puppet thunder as the ep's defacto host. The upside? Drac was there alongside beanied actor/songwriter Jason Segel to perform "Dracula's Lament," their hit moody ballad that first appeared in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Watch the concert and more, below.
If you're wondering, the backing band in the clip above is Los Angeles quintet The Broken West, who are signed to Chapel Hill's Merge Records. Back in September, we reported that Disney and Segal had officially agreed to make The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, a dream project Segel wrote and will star in. Further details have not been announced, but Segel has

Family Guy Moving From Star Wars Spoofs To… Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and Star Trek?
Something, Something, Something Darkside is the Family Guy spoof of The Empire Strikes Back, a sequel to their first Star Wars parody Blue Harvest. It hits DVD and Blu-ray next week and, of course, that means there's been some launch parties and promo events and all that kind of PR silliness. Stopped on the red carpet of one event, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was asked if his tribute toons would extend to funny-business versions of the prequel trilogy. It seems like even he could smell the badness on Clones and Menace:
I'm not as well-versed on the newer movies as much as I am on the old ones. I was a kid when the old ones came out, so they hold a special place in my heart.
So, what would follow on from the Star Wars spoofs? How about Back to the Future, Star Trek or Indiana Jones?
At least,

UK Trailer For Alice In Wonderland Features Key New Footage
9 hours ago
The new UK trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is markedly different from the Us cut in some very significant ways, all of which you can check out for yourself by viewing the embedded version lurking below the break.
This edit has an extended new opening section that shows us scenes from the non-Wonderland set-up to the film, all taking place at a garden party during which Alice is proposed to. Note how her suitor, Hamish, has orange hair and goofy teeth at least a little bit evocative of the Mad Hatter’s. You can also snap a brief look at Alice’s mother, elder sister and Faith and Fiona Chataway, a pair of giggly teenage girls who just don’t “get” Alice at all. If you still somehow thought that this was a straight adaptation of the book, this trailer should pull the wool off of your eyes.

As you know, over the past week, the Iron Man 2 viral has been in full effect: newspaper clippings have been turning up around the internet, providing clues to... what? We didn't know. The last and final clue, pictured above, showed up on LatinoReview this afternoon.
This somehow led fans to the website starksecretconfessionrevealed.com, which provided a ticking timer which led to the launch of the Iron Man 2 movie trailer on Apple. Sundance Photo Preview: The Duplass Brothers’ Cyrus
10 hours ago
After watching The Duplass Brothers' The Puffy Chair at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival I remember telling a friend "this is what real independent filmmaking is all about." The film helped spark an indie film movement called mumblecore, and the brothers have since gone a bit more mainstream, working within the Hollywood system (kinda, sorta... this film for instance features an "upgraded" cast). They return to Sundance with their latest film Cyrus, which will screen in the Premieres category. The film is a comedy about a recently divorced guy meets the woman of his dreams. But then he meets her son who is, well... interesting.
Here is the official synopsis from Sundance:
Alone and acutely depressed, having just learned of his ex-wife’s wedding plans, John can’t believe his luck when he encounters beautiful, charming Molly at a party. The two get along famously and launch a passionate affair, until Molly’s 21-year-old son,

Vincent D’Onofrio to Play Harvey Weinstein in Adaptation of Peter Biskind Book?
Sometimes a trade headline catches my eye and I can do nothing but stare at it for a few moments in disbelief. This is one of those times. Peter Biskind, the rabble-rousing chronicler of Hollywood, spilled a lot of secrets about the 1990s American indie film scene in Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance and the Rise of Independent Film. ('Chronicler' is being generous, according to some who claim that Biskind fabricates or selectively reports facts and events.)
Now the book is, improbably, becoming the basis for a film called Down and Dirty, for which Vincent D'onofrio has been tapped to star as Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein. What I'd give to hear any phone call between the mogul and actor discussing this project.
The project was announced some time ago, but Screen Daily reported the casting news, and doesn't give many more details aside from basics about the picture's production company.

More Iron Man 2 Footage (War Machine!) and Two New ‘Clues’
13 hours ago
We're months away from Iron Man's return to screens, and every scrap of Iron Man 2 footage is precious. Yesterday there was an Entertainment Tonight clip that teased the show's broadcast of a chunk of footage from the film, and now there's a second teaser clip. Both show some of the stuff we saw at Comic Con and new footage as well. But the kicker in the second clip is that we get to see War Machine and Iron Man fighting side by side.
Check out the clip after the break.
Super Iron Man geeks take note: in the flash of footage with both shellhead and War Machine, you can plainly see that Iron Man's chest emblem is triangular, rather than the circle seen in the first film and other IM2 clips and photos. That should be enough to start a wave of conversation about the new armor

The film follows a group of best friends who’ve become bored with their adult lives: Adam (John Cusack) has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou (Rob Corddry) is a party guy who can’t find the party; Nick’s (Craig Robinson) wife controls his every move; and video game-obsessed Jacob (Clark Duke) won’t leave his basement.

Cool Stuff: Tyler Stout’s Lost Poster
The DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com Lost-Inspired art viral has finally come to an end. Here is a round up of the art revealed that we've covered thus far: Hurley-inspired print by Tim Doyle. Locke-inspired poster created by UK artist Olly Moss, Dharma Van print by Methane Studios, "The Crash" poster by Eric Tan, "The 4-toed Statue by Jason Munn, Ken Taylor's "The Smoke Monster", Kevin Tong's "The Hatch", and Dan McCarthy's "Rousseau's Transmission". We haven't posted about any of the Lost poster prints in a while because they sold out before we even learned they were put online.
The 16th and final poster was unveiled last night at Gallery 1988's Lost Underground Art Show, and it is the best one yet -- a poster designed by /Film favorite Tyler Stout. We've been writing about artist Tyler Stout since I first found his "Remember the Alamo" poster at the Alamo Drafthouse.

Breaking: Roy Disney, nephew of Walt Disney, Has Died
14 hours ago
Roy Edward Disney, longtime senior executive for The Walt Disney Company, which his father Roy Oliver Disney and his uncle Walt Disney founded, has died at age 79. Disney owned over 16 million shares of Disney stock (or about 1%) and served as a consultant for the company and Director Emeritus for the Board of Directors. Disney devoted the first 20 years of his career to making nature films for the company, but he is best known for organizing the ousting of two top Disney executives: Ron Miller in 1984, and more recently, Michael Eisner in 2005.
Disney revived the company's animation division after hitting rock bottom with financial and critical failure, paving the way for a string of animated hits, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King.

The Inception Poster: A Couple Things You Might Not Have Noticed
15 hours ago
The teaser poster for Christopher Nolan's Inception hit the web yesterday. There are a couple of observations that we didn't include in our initial posting that I think some of you might be interested in. For instance, did you notice the similarity between the Inception poster and the Joker teaser poster for Christopher Nolan's last film The Dark Knight? I believe Devin might have been the first to notice. For some reason I'm guessing that it was unintentional. More after the jump.
Jen Yamato mentioned to me on Twitter that Leonardo DiCaprio, on the poster, looks a lot like director Chris Nolan. Look at the images below.
A lot of people have also said the same thing about Leonardo when we posted set photos from Inception. The character, at very least, has the same hair style and fashion sense as the film's director.

FBI Finally Make An Arrest in the Wolverine Piracy Case
16 hours ago
The pre-release leak of an unfinished workprint copy of Wolverine, Fox's prime summer blockbuster hopeful, was easily the most high profile piracy case to date. I guess we'll never know quite what effect this crime really had on the box office takings, though some have even speculated that the resulting publicity actually helped the movie's performance. I'm not one of those people, however.
Estimates have claimed that some 4.1 million people saw the film between the April leak and May opening of the film and I find it hard to believe those sorts of numbers couldn't have cost Fox a significant sum of money.
The man accused of copyright infringement by the FBI was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Bronx, New York. Gilberto Sanchez had apparently uploaded the film to the Megaupload file sharing service under one of his aliases. Of course, the next question is,

Rob Marshall Sounds Uncertain About Pirates 4, Script Not Yet Written
18 hours ago
Rob Marshall is out stumping for Nine, which means that he's going to be fielding a lot of questions about the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film. Subtitled On Stranger Tides, the film has been announced by Disney, and in mid-November Marshall said he was doing the film. Now, it sounds like he's not so certain.
ComingSoon talked to the director, who said of the film:
We're still trying to figure out if it's going to all happen. If it happens--i think Johnny's doing a movie with Angelina Jolie in the spring [The Tourist] -- so if it happens, we'll start in the summer, and we'll see. I'm excited. If it happens, it happens. I'd be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I'm excited about the genre.
That summer date is a few months later than we'd last heard, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer said at Comic Con last year that he wanted

Studio Ghibli’s Next Film a New Adaptation of The Borrowers
19 hours ago
Mary Norton's series of books about The Borrowers, a family of miniature people that live beneath the floorboards of a human family's house, have already inspired a number of adaptations. The only American versions I know of are a 1970s TV movie and a late 90's England-us co-production directed by the once undervalued, lately derailed English director Peter Hewitt.
Likely to be the most charming and beautiful version so far, however, is the upcoming Studio Ghibli adaptation, freshly announced for a Japanese release in the Summer of 2010. They do like keeping their cards close to their chests but we do know so far that they've relocated the story from 1950s England to modern day Japan. Other than that, it could all be very faithful or fancifully divergent. They certainly appear to have kept Arriety, the daughter of the Clock family of Borrowers, as the main character. Indeed, they've changed
