This past summer cinephiles, comic-book-geeks and Nic Cage fans alike were excited to hear the news that the Oscar winner was set to play a mobster in Seth Rogen’s movie version of “The Green Hornet.” It was an announcement that seemed to promise a return to the edgier, quirkier, over-the-top Cage that endeared himself to fans during the first decade of his career before movies like “The Family Man” and “National Treasure” came along. Oddly enough, that return to form would instead be marked by a different film — and Cage couldn’t be happier.
“It’s not more fun, but it’s kind of relieving,” Cage told MTV News of playing an over-the-top character in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” which has given the actor his best reviews in years and might just get some awards-season talk. “It’s relieving to get it out; you go through »

Funny People Quick Thoughts: Tough, uncompromising and filled with uncomforting moments and borderline detestable characters, next to dealing with all the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Neanderthals the most intense debates I got into all summer were over Judd Apatow's Funny People. Starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, this dramatic jaunt into the lives and times of standup comedians made me laugh out loud while at the same time it broke my heart. Its poignant saga touched me quite deeply.
Apatow and company do not apologize for their characters' shortcomings, painting a picture of creation, stardom, love and friendship that cuts right to the jugular. Just because Sandler's George Simmons finds himself at Death's doorstep doesn't mean he's going to change his narcissistic ways, and finding out if he will becomes one of the film's many pleasures. Great supporting turns by Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman »

It's hard to believe, but Judd Apatow, the mega-filmmaker who has changed the face of Hollywood comedy, has only directed three films. Having made his mark in television ("Freaks & Geeks," "Larry Sanders") and some screenwriting, Apatow finally exploded into the theatrical world on the back of 2005's "The 40 Year Old Virgin." "Knocked Up" would follow in 2007, and then in 2009, "Funny People," a decidedly more mature comedy that straddled serious dramatic elements. Now arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, will the pic -- which stars Adam Sandler as a dying comedian who mentors younger upstart Seth Rogen -- finally grab a wider fanbase than it found in cinemas?
"Funny People" features a strong audio and video transfer, and comes in both theatrical and unrated versions. Extras are plentiful as well, with the two-disc edition featuring filmmaker commentary, on-set diaries, gag reels, deleted and extended scenes, featurettes on subjects like stand-up, vintage prank »

That movie about the guy with the hammer just got a little more interesting. Kat Dennings has joined the cast of the new live-action adaptation of Thor alongside Natalie Portman.
The Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist star will join an impressive cast that includes Natalie, Anthony Hopkins, Stuart Townsend and Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god of thunder himself with Kenneth Branagh directing.
Now, if a superhero movie starring Oscar nominee Natalie and indie darling Kat seems a little strange, you’re not alone. But then stranger things have happened. I mean, if they can make Seth Rogen a superhero then all bets are apparently off.
Natalie will play “doctor/scientist type” Jane Foster, who has been upgraded from her original comic book incarnation as a nurse. No official word on what Kat will play yet, but according to slashfilm.com a casting breakdown released earlier show a character »

We have a brand new exclusive special feature clip from the brand new DVD Funny People, which arrives on DVD and Blu-ray shelves today, November 24. Click below for our exclusive special feature clip, which takes a look at Seth Rogen's early start to his stand-up comedy career.

When famous comedian George Simmons (Sandler) is given a second chance at a new beginning, he and his assistant, a struggling comedian, Ira (Rogen), return to the places and people that matter most... including the stand-up spots that gave him his start and the girl that got away (Mann). Co-starring Jonah Hill, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman, it's the film critics cheer is "uproariously funny"(Sonny Bunch, The Washington Times).

Dying is easy. Comedy is hard. Dramatic People probably just wasn.t funny enough a title, but may have been more in keeping with the film and not what we have come to expect from Judd Apatow, Adam Sandler, or Seth Rogen. That being said the movie does have some funny moments but pads the plotline. George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is seemingly on top of the world. He.s a comedian whose lowbrow comedy films have made him a rich and famous man. He.s given a death sentence when it.s discovered that he has a rare form of leukemia and only has an eight percent chance to survive if some experimental Canadian medicines work for him. Simmons decides to »

Judd Apatow had a hot streak, and it was bound to run into some bumps. That’s the industry; people are always waiting for failure. Instead - though it didn’t connect theatrically - Funny People is not a bad film, it’s a character study that has some problems when it transitions from one protagonist to another, but you can tell Apatow is trying to stretch his muscles. This may make it more interesting than good, but it’s definitely worth a look. My review of Funny People after the jump.
George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is a Sandler-like movie star who finds out he has a form of leukemia. Faced with the possibility of dying, he goes to a comedy club and does a terrible set as he works through his issues. Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) witnesses it, and has a run-in with George. Then George calls Ira and offers him a job, »

It hurts me to say it, but it looks as though the rule of the funny-big-redheaded-bearded Jew is over. It was only a year ago that Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Jason Segel were the go-to-guys for the R-rated comedy, but Apatow's most recent directorial project, Funny People, did not have the same nearly the same kind of success as its predecessors, earning only $51 during its seven week run. One thing that fans did latch on to in the film, however, was Aziz Ansari's character Randy, who played a major role in the viral marketing prior to the film's release. Obviously impressed by Ansari's performance, it seems as though Apatow has found his new muse. According to Variety, Universal and Apatow have picked up three pitches from Ansari and Human Giant co-star Jason Woliner, who will also direct the projects. The first film is a spin-off based on the »

When death is staring you in the face, why not joke about it? Laughter is the best medicine in Funny People, whose "funny" comes largely by way of the macabre. Adam Sandler stars as George, a big-time comedian who finds himself isolated (and spoiled) by his fame, even more so when he's diagnosed with a rare and fatal disease. Things take a turn for the better when he overcomes the disease and gets a second chance to make things right with his past, taking his assistant and aspiring comic Ira (Seth Rogen) along for the ride. Sandler brings a perfect balance to George, who may be entrapped by both fame and his illness in the weird and impersonal world of megastardom, but he's still...well, really funny. The film's many cameos are also great. Extras: Deleted/gag scenes...

I am sorry to report that Kevin James in Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Seth Rogen in Observe and Report have started a phenomenon, because a new reality series called Mall Cops: Mall of America is coming to Tlc. This is what happens when two movies that are superficially related to each other get released in close chronological proximity.
Granted, the Mall of America is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) malls in America and there is likely more than a fair share of crimes that go on there during any given day. I just wonder if the show is going to hire its own criminals to commit felonies in the mall just to keep things interesting.
I can see it now: the season deals with standard problems like shoplifters and lost children until the season finale which ends in a hostage situation cliffhanger. Want to see the »

First the good news: There won't be a Superbad sequel. That's according to Judd Apatow, who said in a recent interview, "I can't get them to make a Superbad sequel. I begged, but they don't want to ruin it. They think its a gem of a movie, and they don't want a crappy second one." In this situation, "they" are Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the writers, and perhaps stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera.
And whoever "they" are in total, they're right. I don't know where you take it, exactly, or how you get it to find the kind of novelty that made the first film so successful. It's possible, but it's also probable that a sequel would come up more than a little bit short.
Now the bad news, or potentially bad news: Apatow says that Rogen and Golderg may revisit another film for a part two. "There »

Paramount and Scott Rudin are teaming together for a new Christmas comedy that will feature battling Santas. Mike White set to write the script for the film as well.
The comedy is based on the true story of rival factions that developed within a union of professional Santa Clauses who became arch enemies during a Santa Claus civil war. Rudin will produce along with Mike White and his Rip Cord Prods. Rudin and White worked together previously on School of Rock and Orange County.
I am sort of Jack Black fan and could totally see him in this movie and what would be funny is to have Seth Rogen in the other faction and they are both the rivals.
I love Christmas movies as an Fyi, so I am somewhat excited to see this film and hear more about it as it gets developed. Lastly, I am kind of miffed »

Movie stars sell movie tickets, but do they also sell video games? The latest title to put this question to the test is "Brütal Legend," a new action-adventure title set in a heavy-metal land of mythic creatures and crushing tunes that stars Tenacious D frontman and "School of Rock" maestro Jack Black as the voice (and likeness) of its head-banging hero Eddie Riggs.
Developed by acclaimed designer Tim Schafer (of "Grim Fandango," "Psychonauts") with Black's creative input, "Brütal Legend" is a heavily hyped game that's invested a lot in the popularity of Black, who's not only touted in ads as the lead but who even has shown up on red carpets dressed as Riggs. More so than any other recent game, "Brütal Legend" has pinned its retail hopes on players' fondness for its lead voice actor, a decision that says a lot about the industry's desire to market their games around recognizable voice talent. »

Stand-up comedian and film producer Judd Apatow sits down for a Q & A session with the Funny or Die Writer's Room live stream, during when he talks about the possibility of making sequels to two of his produced films, "Pineapple Express" and "Superbad". He says, while sequel of "Pineapple Express" is likely to be made, it's highly unlikely for a sequel to "Superbad" to be made because its star Seth Rogen and screenwriter Evan Goldberg don't want to ruin the original.
"I can't get [Rogen and Goldberg] to make the 'Superbad' sequel. I begged, but they don't want to ruin it. They think it's a gem of a movie and they don't want a crappy second," Judd muses. He goes on revealing, "There's a little talk about a 'Pineapple Express' sequel if that's your cup of tea ... your bowl of smoke. You probably have a better shot of seeing that [than any Superbad 2 or any other Apatow sequel]."

The Apatow-verse still hasn't dealt with sequels as of yet, but it's bound to happen eventually. Yesterday Judd Apatow appeared on the Funny or Die Writer's Room and talked about topics ranging from his first project and living with Adam Sandler, to potential sequels for films he's directed or produced. In regards to the latter, he offered up some info on the potential for Superbad and Pineapple Express sequels. Apatow seemed pretty confident that Superbad 2 probably won't happen anytime soon, despite how much he's begged Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. He says "they don't want to ruin it", and that "it's a gem of a movie, and they don't want a crappy second." He goes on to say that there's a little talk of a Pineapple Express sequel, and that we'd "have a better shot at seeing that." While I had fun with Superbad, I'd personally much rather see any »
